Villains

The villains below are listed by season, ordered by rank or appearance.
Each character has information about possible theories behind the writers' changes.
Key:
J
=
Original Japanese
E = English Adaptation
T/R = Theory/Reason
Queen Metaria vs. The Negaforce
Kuin Metaria
E: The Negaforce
Theory: To keep in with the re-naming of the Dark Kingdom to Negaverse, the writers decided to make this character's new name The Negaforce. A pun on the words Negative and Force, this could have also been an issue with that we can't have two characters named Queen in the one season.
Queen Beryl
Kuin Beriru
E: Queen Beryl

No changes were made to this character's name.
Jadeite vs. Jedite
E: Jedite | Jed
Theory: Jadeite was changed to Jedite because of the way it was Romanized by the writers. Because in Japanese Jadeite's names is written with the katakana characters that represent Jedaito, the writers could have overlooked the intended spelling and gone with something that sounded like the "Jedaito" which is how they came up with "Jedite".
Nephrite vs. Nephlite
Sanjōin, Masato
E: Nephlite | Maxfield Stanton
Theory: As with Jadeite becoming Jedite, the writers had no idea of intended spellings of names of the original Japanese characters. Thus Nephrite was misspelled as Nephlite. With his alias name Masato Sanjōin, this was obviously changed to something that sounded similar in English, thus he was renamed "Maxfield Stanton".
Zoisite vs. Zoycite
Zoisaito
E: Zoycite
Theory: Zoycite is probably the closest way of spelling the way the Japanese pronounce "Zoisaito".
Kunzite vs. Malachite
Kuntsaito
E: Malachite
Theory: This could have been a matter of not knowing what the intended jewel name was or that the name would be too difficult to write in English without it looking weird. I'm guess one of the writers just came up with Malachite from the top of his head, or maybe even did some research on jewels and came up with Malachite because of the greenish shadow used for Kunzite's hair colour.
Dark Kingdom Endymion vs. Negaverse Prince Darien
Dāku Kingudamu no Endimion
E: Evil Prince Darien
Theory: This was changed to keep it similar to his human name. This was probably done because of the younger viewers who would find it hard to follow if they were to have many different names and identities.
Al vs. Alan
Ginga, Seijūrō
E: Alan | Alan Granger
Theory:
En vs. Ann
J: En アン An | Natsumi Ginga 銀河夏美 Ginga, Natsumi
E: Ann | Ann Granger
Theory:
Makaiju vs. Doom Tree | Tree of Life
J: Makaiju 魔界樹 Makaiju
E: Doom Tree | Tree of Life
Theory:
Crimson Rubeus vs. Rubeus
Kurenai no Rubeusu
E: Rubeus
Theory: No major changes made to this character's name. They never mention the crimson part of his name.
Kōan vs. Catzi
Kōan
E: Catzi
Theory: Obviously she was renamed because of her cat-ears hairstyle.
Berthier vs. Bertie
Beruche
E: Bertie
Theory: 2 letters were removed from her name, maybe to remove any link to her original mineral name, Berthierite.
Calaveras vs. Avery
Karaberasu
E: Avery
Theory: Avery is almost a pun of the original element that Calaveras is named after. Calaverite (cal-AVERI-te).
This is just a theory, but it does kinda make sense.
Petz vs. Prizma
J: Petz ペッツ Pettsu
E: Prizma
Theory: I have no idea where they got Prizma from Petz or Pettsu.
Wiseman
Waizuman
E: Wiseman

No changes were made.
Desu Fantomu
E: Doom Phantom
Theory: No major changes were made to this character's name. Death was changed to Doom, which is more suitable for the younger audiences and because DIC were unsure of her original intended spelling of Fantom, it was spelled Phantom (which Fantom is a variant of anyway).
Green Esmeraude vs. Emerald
Midori no Esumerōdo
E: Emerald
Theory: The dub just used the English word for the gem, Emerald. They never mentioned green in front of her name.
Blue Saphir vs. Sapphire
Ao no Safīru
E: Sapphire
Theory: The dub just used the English word for the gem, Sapphire. They never mentioned blue in front of his name.
Prince Demand vs. Prince Diamond
Purinsu Demando
E: Prince Diamond
Theory: Since the intended name "Demand" is the German word for the mineral Diamond, it can be said that they just translated the word.
Black Lady vs. Wicked Lady
Burakku Redi
E: Wicked Lady
Theory: This could have been to remove any racial issues that may arise from her name staying as "Black Lady". Seeing as DiC were under the microscope from the commission of children's television, the name may have been changed for this reason.
Professor Tomoe vs. Doctor Tomoe
Kyōju Tomoe | Sōichi Tomoe Sōichi Tomoe
E: Doctor Souichi Tomoe
Theory: I'm not too sure why the change from professor to doctor, but they kept his original Japanese name although the end "e" wasn't pronounced as the Japanese had.
Kaolinite vs. Kaorinite
Kaori
E: Kaorinite | Kaori
Theory: The dub used a close version of her original name 'Kaolinite', but with a lot of the names in the series, I guess they got stuck on how the "ri" should be Romanized in English.
Eudial vs. Eugeal
Yūjiaru
E: Eugeal
Theory: The dub has tried to use her Romanized name 'Yūjiaru' but spelling it with English tones.
Mimete vs. Mimet
J: Mimete ミメット Mimetto | Mimi Hanyu 「」
E: Mimet | Mimi
Theory: The writers must have decided that "Mimet" was the proper way to Romanize her name, although the original name is spelled a little bit different, they sound very much the same. Her alias first name was kept, but her last name wasn't mentioned.
Tellu vs. Telulu
J: Tellu テルル Teruru
E: Telulu
Theory: The writers just decided that "Telulu" was the proper Romanization for "Teruru". Although her original name was spelled "Tellu" this could just be another writer who isn't sure of the original name intention.
Viluy vs. Byruit
Bidō, Yui
E: Byruit | Julie Bidoh
Theory:
I'm assuming this was a hard name for the dub writers to come up with, as her original name is nothing like the Romanized spelling in Japanese. I'm assuming Byruit is what they could come up with that sounded easier enough to say in English.
Cyprine & Ptilol vs. Cyprin & Petirol
Shipurin & Puchiroru
E: Cyprin & Petirol
Theory: For Cyprine's name they spelled out a similar to the original but using the Romanization sound (without the 'e' at the end like the intended name). The same with Ptilol's name. "Pu=Pe", "chi"="ti" "roru"="rol".
Mistress 9
E: Mistress 9

No changes made to this character's name.
Master Pharaoh 90
E: Pharaoh 90
Theory: No major changes were made to this character's name. They just removed the 'Master' part.

No changes made to this character's name.
Zircon
Jirukon
E: Zircon

No changes made to this character's name.

Taigāsu Ai |
E: Tiger's Eye |
Jack Torashima | Joe Handsome

No changes made to this character's name.
Hawk's-eye vs. Hawk's Eye
Hōkusu Ai
E: Hawk's Eye | Charlie Takano

No changes made to this character's name.
Fisheye vs. Fish Eye
E: Fish Eye |
Nanami Uokawa | Fi

No changes made to this character's name.
Cere Cere vs. Cele Cele
Sere Sere
E: Cele Cele
Theory: The dub used a close version of what her Romanized name would be. So I guess it can still be counted as the original name.
Jun Jun
Jun Jun
E: Jun Jun

No changes made to this character's name.
Palla Palla vs. Para Para
Para Para
E: Para Para
Theory: The dub used her Romanized name 'Para Para'. So I guess it can still be counted as the original name.
Ves Ves vs. Besu Besu
Besu Besu
E: Besu Besu
Theory: The dub used her Romanized name 'Besu Besu'. So I guess it can still be counted as the original name.

Fiore
E:
Fiore
Theory: No changes made to this character's name.
Xenian vs. Kisenian
Kisenian
E:
Kisenian
Theory:
The dub used her Romanized name. This is another case of the dub writers not knowing the origin of the character's name.
Princess Snow Kaguya vs. Snow Queen Kaguya
Purinsesu Sunō Kaguya
E:
Snow Queen Kaguya / Princess Snow Kaguya
Theory: The dub pretty much kept the name origin, but instead of calling her Princess, they replaced it with Queen. I guess this would be to stop any confusion between Princess Kaguya and the Snow Queen. Although Kakeru refers to her as "Princess Snow Kaguya", the DVD cover writes "Snow Queen Kaguya".
Bonnoon vs. --
E: --
Reason: The short movie that Bonnoon appeared was never dubbed into English.
Badiane vs. Badiyanu
Badiyānu
E:
Badiyanu
Theory:
The dub used a close version of her Romanized name 'Badiyānu'. So I guess it can still be counted as using her original Japanese name.
Poupelin vs. Pupulan
Pupuran
E:
Pupulan
Theory:
The dub used a close version of his Romanized name 'Pupuran'. They just chose to Romanize the "ran" as "lan".

Oranja
E:
--
Theory:
The dub never gave this character an official name
.
Banane vs. Bananu
J: Banane バナヌ Bananu

Theory: The dub never gave this character an official name, because his name was never actually mentioned.
